2024 Sabrina Trail

Saturday 25th May 2024

Facebook Facebook Cambrian Mountain Events

Since its inaugural launch in 2006, the Sabrina Walk has gained considerable popularity in the walking community across the UK and is a firm favourite of walkers who frequent the Cambrian Mountains in the Spring. In line with the recent internal re-structure at CME, we are now rebranding this popular Event as the “Sabrina Trail”.

The Route and Event remain the same; but again due to the internal restructure, we have no alternative but to categorise this event as “Difficult” and class it as an “Entry Level” event we host. Unfortunately in this regard we will not be hosting the Semi Sabrina again and apologies in advance for any inconvenience in this regard.

A majority of the route is on tracks, trails and minor roads; but there are also sections routed across mountain and lowland Wilderness Terrain. These sections in the Wilderness Terrain can be remote, barren, desolate, sparse and unforgiving; which is not to be trivialised and is definitely not for those who lack the required endurance, level of fitness, experience, mountain skills or confidence required to safely undertake and complete it self-supported.

So, it is definitely not for the inexperienced or those who lack confidence – do not Enter if you do not meet/have the required entry criteria!

The Sabrina Story

The River Severn, the longest river in the UK, takes its rise nine miles to the west of Llanidloes high up on the slopes of Pumlumon; the highest point in the central range of the Cambrian Mountains. The Roman name for the Severn (the Hafren in Welsh) was Sabrina, and ancient myth tells Sabrina was one of three sisters, all water nymphs, who met on Pen Pumlumon to discuss how they might wend their way to the sea. Each sister took a different route, Ystwyth to the west and Varga (the Wye) away to the south, while Sabrina who loved the land, set out on a slow meandering course that led her far into the east. The spirit of Sabrina still resides in the sparkling waters of the river and nowhere is her benevolent presence more apparent than here, where she first set forth upon her long journey to the sea.

The 2024 Sabrina Trail

The Route

Heads out of Llanidloes following the national trail of Glyndwr's Way. Leading up past the Van Pool, the path opens up extensive views of the Llyn Clywedog and the surrounding countryside, before following the shoreline of the lake to the borders of the Hafren Forest and Cwmbiga Farm. Climbing up through the Forest to the slopes of Pen Pumlumon Arwystli, the trail then visits the source of the Severn at 752m. Descending through the forest along the Severn Way long distance path, the trail next takes to the watershed of the Severn and the Clywedog, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding countryside before arriving back in Llanidloes.

Note: a minor change has been made to the original Sabrina route: at Cwmbiga you now carry on straight on the Minor Road and take the next main Forestry Track that leads you up to Check Point 3 and the Source of the Severn, without any change to the overall distance. This alteration is denoted on the current Route Map and included in the Route Waypoint Coordinates that you will receive once you have completed your Entry and paid the Entry Fee.

This challenging but scenic 40k route has a total ascent of 3,779ft across the Cambrian Mountains; and is stringently only open to Entrants who possess required endurance, level of fitness, experience, mountain skills and confidence required to safely undertake and complete it “self-supported” from Start to Finish.

The route may be waymarked with confidence indicators at key points and changes of direction, but WILL NOT BE HAND-RAILED to support any inexperience or lack of Navigational Skills.

There will be manned Check Point Stations (CP), unmanned Emergency Rendezvous Stations (ERv), Mountain Safety Teams in attendance, and Sweeper Teams on foot or in off-road vehicles as deemed necessary by the Event Organisation Team to instil our duty of care to the capable Entrants who take part; but definitely NOT to “baby-sit” or “escort” incapable Entrants. If in doubt of your capability to safely undertake and complete this event, in the first instance – DO NOT ENTER AND DO NOT TAKE THE RISK!

Note: sections of the route are through private "working" Farmland with expressive permission from the landowners, for the Event day only. Participants must stringently respect this, adhere to any notices or rules displayed and ensure all closed gates are left closed and open gates left as found when travelling through such Farmland. Strict compliance with the "Country Code" is also required.

Event notifications and information will be sent by email (to the email address you use to register your Entry) and also posted on our Facebook Page.

Once you Book your Entry and pay the Entry Fee, please ensure you use the link provided to download your Entry Pack, and comprehensively read and understand all aspects associated with the Event including the Terms, Conditions, Rules and Requisites of the Event. If you are unable to comply with any key aspect therein, you MUST notify the Event Team by email within 48hrs of registering your Entry advising of why you cannot comply; and where the Event Admin Team deemed it reasonable, your Entry Fee will be refunded in full and you Entry removed from our systems.
